SHOULD ONE BE INITIATED FORMALLY TO WORSHIP SHIVA?



SHIVA himself is all. He is the worshiped, worshiper and the process of worship. Hence, you need no "AADAMBARS".
In order to pray to Shiva, there exists no ideal time and he is "Kaalon ke Kaal-Mahakaal"
You need not offer anything to Shiva accept devotion as he is "Vishwamaya (nor anyone has the capacity to offer him anything)
Hence, you need not do anything. Just close your eyes, fold your hands humbly and submit to Shiva as your Guru as he is "Adi Guru" and you can go ahead n read the sacred litrature. However before you read any of the puranas make sure you read "Understanding Shiva" from art of living........it will give you clarity of thought.
Since you are starting on the path of Shaivism..... I must mention a piece from Shiva's THIRUMANDIRAM:
"He who makes offerings to me merely in temples may not find me but he who makes offerings to one of my creations like a hungry dog, a thirsty tree and a pennyless poor will surely have my darshan in every spec of the brahman"

HOW DID THE WORD HINDU ORIGINATE? The word Hindu is often misused.The fact is that the BOTH the words "Hindu" and "India" have foreign origin. The word "Hindu" is neither a Sanskrit word nor is this word found in any of the native dialects and languages of India. It should be noted that "Hindu" is NOT a religious word at all. There is no reference of the word "hindu" in the Ancient Vedic Scriptures. It is said that the Persians used to refer to the Indus river as Sindhu.
